For many people, leisure time is an opportunity to get outdoors, have some fun andmeet interesting people. Add two pieces of advanced 21stcentury technology — global positioning system (GPS) devices andthe Internet — to get “geocaching”.

The word geocachingcomes from “geo” (earth) and “cache” (hidden storage). Geocacherslog onto a website to find information about the location of acache — usually a waterproof plastic box containing small itemssuch as toys and CDs — along with a notebook where “finders” canenter comments and learn about the cache “owner”, the person whocreated and hid the cache. Finders may take any of the items in thecache but are expected to replace them with something of similarvalue. They then visit the website again and write a message to theowner.

Geocaching becamepossible on May 1, 2000, when a satellite system developed by theU.S. Department of Defense was made public. Using an inexpensiveGPS device, anyone on earth can send a signal to the satellites andreceive information about their position. This is basically ahigh-tech version of orienteering, the traditional pastime whichuses maps and compasses instead of GPS to determine one’slocation.

Geocachers are a veryconsiderate group. Owners carefully choose a cache’s location togive finders an enjoyable experience, such as a beautiful view or agood campsite. They also consider the environmental impact of theircache since it could result in an increased number of visitors toan area. As for the content of the caches, owners and finders mustonly use items that are suitable for the whole family, as cachesare found by geocachers of all ages.

4. According to thepassage, geocaching is __________.

A. an outdoor leisureactivity B. a new type of technology

C. a game used toteachgeography D. a program to protect environment

5. How can finderslearn about the cache owners?

C. From thenotebook. D. From the satellite.

6. Which of thefollowing is NOT used in geocaching?

A. A GPSdevice. B. A compass.

C. A plasticcontainer. D. The Internet.

7. Which of thefollowing is true according to the passage?

A.Most geocachers are adults.

B. Any item can be placed in the caches.

C. The caches shouldbe put in a remote place.

D. Geocachers try to avoid damaging the environment.

As a child, visitingthe zoo was more a punishment than a treat. I didn’t find thechimps’ tea parties funny, nor the bird shows entertaining. Feedingtime for seals was less painful, but their performances stillseemed like they belonged more in a circus.

And I hatedcircuses, especially the animal acts — men teasing lions, girlsbalancing on elephants and monkeys playing football. I knew thatevery trick a circus animal did was unnatural, achieved throughstrict training and quite possibly cruelty.

Happily, during mylifetime public attitudes and the law have changed. Circuses usingwild animals are now almost extinct, and zoos have definitelyevolved.

When my children wereyoung, I occasionally took them to our local zoo. The elephantswere in tiny cages and the gorillas looked bored as they satpeeling bananas and staring at teasing visitors. Each cage had asign which listed the animal’s name and where it came from. But,back then, there was little information included about theenvironmental challenges they faced.

As a result, environmentalists and animal lovers often oppose zoos. “Animalsbelong in the wild,” is a common — and understandable — complaint. But what do the animals themselves prefer?

Generally speaking, zoo animals have a longer life. But — you may protest — they arenot free. What? Free to be hunted and killed, free to die of hungeror thirst? Maybe sitting in a cage eating bananas isn’t sobad.

Not that suchconditions are acceptable in modern zoos, due to the work of BIAZA,the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums. These daysevery zoo requires BIAZA’s approval to operate, and the associationsets the standards, observes conditions in zoos and developsanimal-research programmes, both in the UK and abroad. BIAZA alsoorganises the animal exchanges between zoos all over theworld.

Consequently, today, most zoo animals are born and raised in zoos, live in large, comfortable enclosures and are cared for by well-trained,knowledgeable and caring zoo employees. Of course it’s nosubstitute for living in the wild but unfortunately this isn’talways possible. Meanwhile, why not visit your local zoo and decidefor yourself?

8. The passage ismainly about __________.

A. how zoos haveimproved

B. whether a zooshould be closed down

C. a newenvironmental organisation

D. the differencebetween zoos and circuses

9. From Paragraph 2,we can guess that the writer believes circus animals__________.

A. had much shorterlives than those in the wild

B. were not treatedwell by their trainers

C. should have beenplaced in zoos

D. were not asintelligent as those in zoos

10. Which of thefollowing roles are performed by BIAZA?

A. Organising animalstudy projects and training zoo workers.

B. Checking zooconditions and arranging animal exchanges.

C. Designing zoos andapproving zoo operations.

D. Caring for illanimals and setting zoo standards.

11. Which of thefollowing statements about zoos would the writer agreewith?

A. Zoo animals shouldbe freed into the wild.

B. Zoos are morepopular now than in the past.

C. Zoo animals aremore restricted than in the past.

D. Zoos now providecaring living conditions for animals.
